Everytime I finish a really really really really good book I'm afraid I'll never have that kind of experience again. But then I find another good book. Right?

Anyway.

I just finished Kite Runner.

And I need some book recommendations...books that are WICKED WICKED good and teach you about other cultures or about life or about anything. ...Basically no fantasy, bubblegum fluff books. Though I do love Harry Potter.

I don't know.

I want somethin REAL good ? Slightly depressing. Intense. Dramatic but not overly done. Ya know. Good stuff.

Like Kite Runner.

Ok I'm not going to give up the facebook account because it's a wonderful way to stay in touch with people, but oh my god. I do not want to know who friended who or who wrote what where. That's a bit too gossipy and stalkerish even for my liking...

I FIXED MY INTERNETS!!!!

Ever since I got here one of the Ethernet plug-in places was missing. So I was like "sigh call CIS" and then they never got back to me of course so I looked at it and it was just pushed into the wall so I popped out the face plate...and did a weebit of damage...And after much effort and scraping of fingers, pulled it out! And thereby fixed my internets!! Though now we have a really loose faceplate and a bit of plaster on the floor.

And a really nasty knife.

I just saw Little Miss Sunshine, and it had music from the guy I've been listening to nonstop lately!!! Surfjan Stevens!!! everyone should go buy any of his albums right now because they are all good. Though the only one I have is Illinoise, but yeah. That guy's a freaking genius and he's my new music love. He has songs in the same meter I write songs in!

I really wanna buy artwork for my dorm room and just because I love looking at it so much.

But I'm having trouble deciding.

So I'm just throwing these out as options - feel free to tell me what you think :)

Honestly, I don't want to fly anymore. This is bloody ridiculous. I mean yeah it's kind of old news at this point, but it still bothers me that I can't take shampoo in my carry on luggage. No really, it does bother me - because when you put it in the cargo hold it usually explodes and makes a big mess. So travelling = no shampoo. And it's probably gonna become mandatory to take off your shoes, wait longer in line so they can check the muslims four times over (They're going to start double checking them. Intentionally.) and I'm guessing I'll watch many innocent items be confiscated by TSA.

Taking my laptop out of the bag and removing everything from my pockets already takes enough time. Now all of this? It's crazy. People behind you in line always glare at you and make you feel like you're moving too slow even though they have to do the same thing.

Anyway. I will be flying Sep 3rd back from VA. On the worst airline ever. Hopefully things are better by then.

I'm back in Elsah! I like my job, I got to mess with all these instruments and "inspect" them for damages...although I played a couple of them ^^; It was great. Violin is freakin hard. shaky hands don't help.

I also organized some music, and it occurred to me that I actually like doing things like that. I don't know why. I did it for mom a lot and it was stressful, but in a different environment I actually like it.

So, I'm at boba tea right now with my cookies n creme frap. DELICIOUS. This is my only way of online access i think since the library is closed...but it opens again July 6th or soemthing. Anyway, hi everybody!

I got my diva cup today, too. Excitement!

And I talked to Jenny Manker, I got to give her all of my college wisdom, teehee.

Alright, I hope everyone who's reading this has a good day/week/summer :P

later kiddos!

If you're not going to read the article, here's the premise (well, the part I wanna talk about anyway): put a tax on soft drinks because they are so fattening and are held highly responsible for the obesity rate in children/teens.

This seems so weird to me. I admire the motive behind it - making people less inclined to drink soda and drink something healthier - but the implementation of it seems really dangerous to me. There is a better word than dangerous I just don't know what it is.

If you want an ideal society where people make good choices for themselves, you have to give them an incentive to do things on their own. People have to be taught to think for themselves. Money or taxes or anything like that does not have this power.

If you make tasty treats like coke more expensive because it's unhealthy, people will make the decision to not drink coke because of money instead of something deeper. Monetary values become more important than personal values.

In my opinion, that's not conducive to a better society. Perhaps it is more conducive to a controlled society...Because let's face it, a monetary incentive is a pretty strong incentive. I'm sure that people can be controlled to act in a certain way that does, in fact, promote a better lifestyle. That doesn't make it right.

What I'm trying so hard to believe is that the best lifestyle, which our American society is perfectly capable of, is education. Perhaps I'm being wicked optimistic, but so many cliche's are popping into my head right now...training a child in which the way he should go. teach a man to fish and you feed him for life.

If we can teach our children and our men to make decisions for themselves, then we can put them in any environment and have them grow into a good society.

If our society could make an effort to really teach parents, children, everyone - how to eat right, how to make healthy choices, etc. then people's perception of food could change entirely. Sugar tastes good to us because it is so heavily embedded in our diet. Everything has sugar in it. But that is our choice, and it is in our mentality.

Part of education is our surroundings and observations. McDonalds are part of city landscapes. Greasy, nasty, burgers and fries and sodas are so readily available. Another problem with monetary incentives is that they can manipulate both ways - what's cheaper in today's society? The nasty, fat food. If higher taxes are placed on fatty foods, McDonalds and other such corporations will find ways to make themselves even more available to people. Advertising could get heavier, other things could get cheaper, burgers will get bigger - marketing can do wonders.

Anything that politics and the economy can do to combat fattie foods will be equaled by the corporations who sell these fattie foods. They will find a way to make the foods we shouldn't eat even more appealing.

If we can educate people to make these choices for themselves and be independent thinkers from the media, then can progress be made in the battle to get people to eat healthier.

Wow! I am always so surprised by my grades. I actually got an A in Musicianship! AN A!!! That is so crazy, you have no idea.

A B+ in Chromatic Harmony...my lowest grade ^^; But still, hah. I'm awesome.

Once again, I could be on the flippin honor roll but I still haven't passed out of the math test. THAT SUCKS.

*ahem*

So yeah. Wow. I'm really impressed with my grades. I don't know why, but I think counterpoint (the next in the music theory classes) will be loads better. We'll see.

Look.

I'll admit it.

I can't make decisions and I don't know what I want.

So please take this poll as objectively as possible w/ as little comment as possible.

Should I get a flippin-burgers job here in Virginia or go back to Elsah in two weeks and work for the music department?
